MICHELLE MALONE
Michelle Malone's musical roots run deep and wide like the mighty Mississippi river, twisting and turning through rock, blues, and alt-country music territory.
Born and raised in Atlanta by a musician mother she began touring in the summers at an early age. Growing up listening to her mother and grandmother sing in church choir on Sunday when they weren’t on the road. She dropped out of high school at 16 and ran away from home. After a few brushes with the law, she went back to high school and graduated class valedictorian. She attended Agnes Scott College with dreams of becoming a doctor, but when offered a record deal by Clive Davis at Arista Records, she decided that seemed a lot more interesting.
When it came time to craft her own sound, she took those religious and secular roots, blended in enough folk, rock and blues to satisfy, and came up with a rootsy high-spirited sound that brings acoustic and electric slide and passionate vocals together harkening back to the lost recordings of Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Lucinda Williams fronting The Rolling Stones.
She’s had her share of success, courtesy of some 15 studio albums, her own independent SBS Records label, numerous top flight film and TV soundtracks, kudos from the critics and collaborations with a remarkable roster of amazing artists, among them, the late Gregg Allman, ZZ Top, Ellen DeGeneres and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Chuck Leavell, the master keyboardist who has backed both the the Rolling Stones and the Allman Brothers, cited her as “One of the best female vocalists I’ve ever heard.” Over the course of Malone’s career, she has shared stages with artists from Indigo Girls, SugarLand's Kristian Bush, Brandi Carlisle, and Mississippi All-Stars Luther Dickenson. Her powerful live show will take you on a journey from red dirt back roads to bright city lights, whether she's solo acoustic in a living room concert or in a big arena backed by her band.
Malone has also made time for philanthropic endeavors such as running the Paris marathon for Team In Training/The Leukemia Society, and cycling with Team Earth Challenge from Atlanta to Yucca Mountain, NV in protest of the nuclear waste dumping. In 2012 she started a college scholarship fund for girls in need. She currently contributes to various women's and children's non-profit organizations, and donates time to local Georgia music organizations and schools.
Michelle Says - In case you don't yet know about my new record yet, let me tell you about it, because I am so very excited for you to hear it for so many great reasons. Besides the songs I've written at my little green kitchen table, I've been cowriting with Dean Dillon (Tennessee Whiskey, Miami, My Amy, A lot Of Things Different - you should watch his Amazon Doc), so you know the songs are top shelf. You may have heard me sing some of them live. There are also an impressive array of special guests like Buddy Miller, Will Kimbrough, Charlie Starr and Paul Jackson of Blackberry Smoke, Randall Bramblett, Rick Richards of Georgia Satellites, Eliot Bronson, Trina Meade, and of course, the fantastic core all-star band of Doug Kees, Tom “Panda” Ryan, Trish Land and Mike Rizzi. It really is a great record. AND You can only get it from me at a show or here available on CD, download, USB card, and orange LP (!!!) for a fair price equivalent to the time invested in writing and recording it. It will not be available for streaming for quite a while (except for singles) until the expenses are paid - make sense? I am ever so grateful to say that fans like you have made it possible for me to have made music my career for over 35 years, and I want to be able to continue recording. I know I am going against the grain and taking a chance, but I choose to be fairly compensated for my hard work, and I am betting that you would do the same. I hope you understand and will continue to support me and all independent musicians. I promise if you feel it's not worth the price of a movie ticket and popcorn, I will refund your money. After all, music will be here for you forever unlike that movie or Starbucks drink. I'm so grateful to you for being a fan and friend. Thank you.
"While the vocals and songs on Slings and Arrows are outstanding, the slide guitar work is the real revelation.”
- NO DEPRESSION
“Raucous and jubilant - somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Shelby Lynne comes Malone alternating between soulful ballads and rowdy, riffy blasters. ”
- ROLLING STONE
“Equal parts guitar slinger and sweet songstress, with masterful lyrical introspection – sublime to raucous. ”
GUITAR WORLD
“ Michelle Malone has one of the most remarkable voices I’ve ever heard, uniquely able to blow the roof off the place and then whisper a soft song that will break your damn heart. ”
PASTE MAGAZINE
"Malone emerges, not as an ingénue, but as the definition of the Atlanta rock sound--Southern, blues-touched, guitar-driven, but still about the song."
