Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, and now based in Nashville, Tennessee, he's recognized for his impressionistic and emotionally resonant songwriting, often described as crafting "fine portraits of American life". Black's songs have been covered by a diverse array of artists, including Alison Krauss, Waylon Jennings, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and BlackHawk. Beyond his songwriting prowess, Black is also a performer with a career spanning over three decades. He's released multiple self-produced albums and tours widely. His album "Birmingham Road" was notably recorded with members of the band Wilco. In 2007, listeners of Boston's WUMB radio voted him among the top 100 most important Folk artists of the previous 25 years. Black has also been recognized by NPR as a digital music pioneer for his podcast "Black Tuesdays" He's a master storyteller whose live performances are lauded for their passion and soulfulness. Black has also lent his talents to film and television, composing music for various indie films and the acclaimed PBS documentary "The Appalachians"
